Tucson, AZ 85746

Description:

Founded by a Jesuit missionary and rebuilt by Franciscans, the 18th century San Xavier Del Bac Mission exhibits a graceful combination of Byzantine, Moorish and late Mexican Renaissance architecture. The church's interior is a treasure trove of colorful carvings, paintings, frescoes and statues depicting New Spain and Native American motifs. Though never fully completed, as evident in the conspicuously missing dome of one bell tower, the church is still stunning and known as the "White Dove of the Desert." The mission is located 10 miles south of downtown Tucson and remains a functioning church, serving the people of the Tohono O'odham nation.
